Web Development Intern
Full or part-time, volunteer
About the position:The Arizona State Treasurer's Office is looking for one, possibly two, web development interns to join the IT team in supporting the development of both public-facing and internal web application and website development projects. We are a small office of about 25 people with an equally small yet dedicated IT team. You will be working with the IT manager and assisting with the development of critical applications for the daily office operation.
Who we're looking for:We are looking for an eager and bright individual who is interested in learning about production-level web application development in a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP) environment. The ideal candidate will have some experience on Linux systems and will also have worked on websites and/or web applications in the past. Study in computer science or IS is not necessary though might be helpful.
Ideal experience:
- Linux command line proficiency
- Understanding of client/server Internet protocols
- HTML 4/5
- Object-oriented PHP 5
- Zend, CakePHP, or CodeIgniter framework experience
- Javascript and/or JQuery and AJAX
- CSS/web design
- Web development debugging practices
- Version control (SVN, Git, Mercurial)
If you don’t have experience or in-depth knowledge in all of the above, don’t worry, that’s why this is an internship. However, you should have some experience with at least three of the above skills. We place a greater emphasis on your personality and ability to learn and adapt than your current expertise. We are looking for people who are outgoing, personable, and enjoy conversation as much as coding. Having said that, you must also be able to take direction and be open to constructive comments and improvements.
What you’ll gain from this:
- If you can get course credit for this, we’ll fill out any paperwork necessary.
- You will learn enterprise-level web development practices and gain the experience to prepare you for a career in web application development.
- Knowledge of PHP, Linux, source-code control, project management methodologies, and working in small development teams.
- Apache configurations for vhosts and general web server practices.
- Database design, SQL queries, tools, and practices.
- PHP and framework expertise.
- Javascript and JQuery expertise.
- Our goal is to make sure that you are marketable after this experience.
